Why this blog?

Welcome to this blog! I’m so glad you stopped by!

In this post, I’ll explain why I’ve started joshuabontrager.com and how you can join the battle for truth.

For most of my life, I lived in the same farmhouse near Kalona Iowa. Growing up on the farm, I was taught work ethic, responsibility, initiative, and vital life skills. Above all, I was taught to love, study, and memorize God’s Word. My parents taught me to make God’s Word the foundation of my life.

Sadly, the world and many Christians seems to have discarded God’s truth as the foundation for life. That’s why I started this blog.

The Crisis Today

Everywhere around us we view the results of culture built on man’s philosophies. It seems as if these philosophies have almost destroyed God’s three institutions of government, church, and family. Today, over 2.3 million Americans are incarcerated in state and federal prisons. In our time, around 50% of Americans are slaves to government entitlements.

Due to abortion, feminism, divorce, and government programs, less than half of all children live in a Biblical family, with two parents in their first marriage. Sadly, only 24% of Americans believe the Bible the literal Word of God. As we view these disturbing trends, it seems that our entire culture has drifted from the final authority of God’s Word to the authority of man.

The Solution For Today

What is the answer for today? What must we do to reclaim the culture?

I Peter 4:17 tells us, “The time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God.” The solution to our crisis begins with Christians and requires a life-time of dedication to the truth of God’s Word. It requires intentional Christians who know, live, and speak God’s truth.

Know the Truth

First, we must know the truth. Christ said in John 8:31-32, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Shockingly, only 11% of all Americans have ever read the entire Bible through cover to cover. Even fewer take the time to deeply study and memorize it. In reality, we cannot expect to change the world if we do not know and understand the Word of the Creator.

Live the Truth

Second, we must live the truth. It is not enough to know God’s Word if we fail to apply it to our lives. As James exhorted, “But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22). We must glorify God by making Jesus look good in every single thing we do, from work, to family, to entertainment, to time and every other activity (I Corinthians 10:31).

To live the truth, we must realize that we do not exist to build our own kingdoms on this earth, as the American Dream suggests. Rather, we are here to build Christ’s kingdom, so that His will may be done “in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:11).

Speak the Truth

Last, we must speak the truth. As “ambassadors of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20), the words we speak must be God’s, not our own. We must “preach the Word” (2 Timothy 4:2) rather than promoting ourselves. From the pastor in the pulpit, to the worker in the factory, to the shopper at the grocery store, to the politician in Washington, to the parent in the home we are all called to faithfully proclaim God’s Word so that Christ may be glorified and lives may be transformed.

The solution to the crisis today begins with Intentional Christians who commit to know, live, and speak God’s truth. Christ commanded, “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). In one word, we must “surrender” to the truth.

What To Expect

This blog seeks to provide the solution of God’s Word to the problems we face today. To accomplish that mission, I will post a new article every Tuesday.

Posts will include topics such as, “Why memorize God’s Word?” “How Intentional Christianity Can Change the World,” “How to Redeem the Time,” “Why You Should Take Notes: and How to Take Them,” “Why a Christian should Read,” “Should a Christian Be Involved in Politics?” “What is Man’s Ultimate Purpose?” “Living a Life of Faithful Stewardship,” “Speaking the Truth in Love,” “Can a Christian be a Marxist?” and “The Most Important Hour of the Day.”

    1. Thanks Katie! I couldn’t imagine life without my nine siblings. I pray that this blog will be a blessing.

  2. Hey Elizabeth Mitton here. I really appreciate you and your family. Thanks for being willing to be in the world but not of the world. We need more believers who are willing to stand for truth and to also live the truth! Looking forward to future posts.

  3. The greatest threat to the Church today is from within. We have lost our first love. American’s are in the midsts of a downward spiral. The moral decay of our nation. When an epistemological shift takes place, as it has in the current form of relativism, it ushers in a cultural change, not for the better, but for the worse. Relativism begins with the thought process and the desire to be an individual that determines what is truth and what is their own morality.

When the thought process defines what is truth to the individual, it is not satisfied with just the thought of truth, their truth must be manifested in some form, to establish it as truth in a culture. Relativism is a progressive shift. It has moved from thought to feelings. It is no longer satisfied with “I think, therefore I am”. Our culture now demands what you feel is the new relativism. “I feel therefore I am.”

The “New Morality” is never satisfied until everyone embraces it, or at least lives with it in an acceptable manner. In order for this morality to be established in a culture there must be the intervention of government. It is presented as “rights” on a civil basis. Their feelings now have the backing of laws, because they do not know how to accept what is “right” when it comes to others feelings. People may think they are a moral person, because they have established and embraced a set of morals established years ago. That is no longer acceptable to a progressive culture.

The hard decline of morality began in the 60’s and has gained speed to the present day, with more to come. If a person disagrees with the new morality being presented, they become the cog in the wheel of progress. They are then seen as a person that is not willing to accept others, or to the greater degree, a person of hate. The new morality wants to put those that disagree with them in their place, by trying to shame them and call them on the mat. They then become the unloving and hateful and they become fearful of those that profess to be loving and all accepting.

But the new morality is not all accepting. They do not accept others, that do not accept them. The unaccepting are the intolerant and they the tolerant. That is, until they are confronted by their very same argument. When you disagree, they become the intolerant of those that disagree and their beliefs. This is the hypocrisy of the new morality. The new morality says you must agree with all forms of individual morality. Their argument is: Who are you to tell another person how they feel and that their feelings are wrong. The new tolerance is embracing the new morality as acceptable and true.

With the decline of morality produces the decline of a culture and when the culture embraces a relativism in its fulness, the nation declines and falls apart. When the government uses shame to establish a set of new morals, the decline is in full swing. When good is called bad and bad is called good, we have arrived. This is the pinnacle of relativism. Relativism says: who are you to define what is good and what is bad? Is that not up to the individual? Then why does the government step in and establish laws and regulations defining what is good and what is bad? The new morality is disguised as a civil rights movement. Therefore, the government is not defining what is good or bad they are standing up for peoples rights.

Where is the line drawn? Why can a man not marry two women or a women marry two men or three or more. Why not allow an adult to have a sexual relationship with a child. Where do you draw the line? No matter where you draw the line you are infringing on how someone feels. Do they not have the same rights? When moral feelings and civil rights are combined they will not be able to define a line. Because their line will always infringe on someone else’s rights and feelings.

What can be done? What can Christians do? First, we must prepare ourselves for persecution. If we want to take a stand, it will cost us. I do not claim to know what it might cost, but it will cost something. We have a circle of influence in our life. This is the beginning of our battle ground. If we are not willing to enter into the battle, then do not get dressed for battle. The battle will be harsh and relentless. If we are not willing and ready, our options are limited. Either we get ready and willing or sit it out. As a child of the King, our option to sit it out is not who we are. I believe that the greatness of America lies in the moral foundation of the Word of God and His people. This is not about politics, but it is about the moral fiber of America.
2 Timothy 4:1-4 (NASB) I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; (or feelings) and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths.

That time has come. Feelings are the new doctrine, and people want feel good stories and small doses of make me happy sermons. Keep it light and easy and entertaining. This is the cry of the cultural christian. To many churches today are all about feeling good and not about obedience. If you do not have a desire for obedience that is rooted in faith, you are most likely not a Christian.
John 14:23-24 (NASB) Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

They may think this is harsh but if Christians do not tell the truth of God’s Word, then that is harsh. I am one that will be considered narrow minded and I am. I believe the road to truth is very narrow and the road to destruction is very broad. I therefore chose to follow the narrow road as I see it in the Word of God. As you take your stand for the truth and as you encourage others to be intentional you will experience persecution. Thank you for taking a stand.

    1. Hello Bruce,

Thanks for your thoughts! Your opening comment reminded me of Revelation 2:4, which says, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” Like the Ephesian church, I’m afraid the American church has largely forgotten the why behind what they are doing.

As you alluded to, we must realize that “speaking the truth in love” is the most loving thing to do. May we together be faithful stewards who do not fail to share God’s truth with those who desperately need it.

  4. Excellent video! Such truth that everyone needs to hear!! My parents, siblings and I were SO excited to see a 2o year-old stand so boldly for the truth and passionately wanting to proclaim it! That was my father’s number one goal in life, when he got out of the army and was saved at 19 years old, all he wanted was to go for the truth and nothing but the truth. Such a Godly father has an immensely great influence over his children, and hundreds of people around him pointing them to follow and obey Jesus Christ not with lips, but with the heart. You can impact a generation&beyond, go for it!! We’re praying for you. May you grow to be more and more like Jesus in this coming year.

  5. I am super excited about this website! I have already been encouraged and I have only read the first post! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this Josh! Praying that the Lord will give you wisdom as you write!

  6. I am looking forward to your future posts! Your exhortation to know, live, and speak the truth is so important. I know that for me personally, I struggle with confidently speaking the truth sometimes.

  7. WAY to go joshua & cassidy!!! OMGoodness, it is AMAZING to see how quickly & powerfully you have taken off on your influential journey for GOD’S word!!!! may blessings ABOUND!!! 🙂
