The Miracle of The Cross

Published by Joshua Bontrager on

With Resurrection Day just around the corner, we should pause to remember what Christ has done for us. Truly, without the cross and the empty tomb, Christianity would be just another world religion, full of tradition, but powerless to prevail in this world and the next.

Christ’s Power vs. Man’s Power

Men labor for years to accomplish what Christ can do instantaneously. Yet in all their effort, men can never replicate Christ’s magic touch. At best, they can only hope to reflect it.

No builder can come close to matching what God did in Creation, when, as Master Architect, He spoke everything into into existence, ex nihilo. The physicians vainly tried for twelve years to heal the woman with the issue of blood. Christ did it in one moment. His touch made the difference.

Today, billions work their entire lives to receive the forgiveness of their sins that only Christ can provide.

For every soul, the greatest miracle occurred when Christ uttered those last words, “It is finished.” In three ways, this miracle stands out from all other miracles that Christ performed.

1. A Complete Miracle

In Christ’s earthly miracles He healed bodies that would die again; on the cross He healed souls for eternity.

He raised Lazarus from the dead, but Lazarus would die again. So would the blind man.

Not so with Calvary. In every sense, Golgotha was was total, final, and complete. As He assured Martha, “Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die” (John 11:26). When Christ saves, He saves forever.

2. A Sacrificial Miracle

Imagine a doctor giving his blood to save a dying patient. Spiritually, that’s what Christ did for us.

In the Old Testament, the blood of goats and calves secured temporary covering. But then Christ came.

“By His own blood He entered once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us” (Hebrews 9:12).

3. A Timeless Miracle

What happened at the cross forever altered the course of history, setting the stage for the transformation of the world.

Christ has empowered and commissioned us to share this miracle with others. We have no power in ourselves—only this “treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Corinthians 4:7). Christ calls us to share His miracle to all. Like all of His other miracles, those who would receive the miracle of the gospel must accept it by faith.

In the end, the transformational miracle of the cross is inextricably linked with the miracle of the resurrection, because in both the saving of sinners is accomplished. It’s His death on the cross that pays the price for our sin. His resurrection from the dead gives us eternal life.

For the Christian, the cross is a glorious reality, offering both eternal salvation and daily victory through Christ’s all-sufficient blood.

“Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

QUESTION: Have you become born again through the miracle of the cross? If so, does this miracle still stir your soul today?

Amen, Joshua! “For the Christian, the cross is a glorious reality, offering both eternal salvation and daily victory through Christ’s all-sufficient blood.” How true that is indeed! Eternal life begins today because of the incredible Salvation we have obtained through his blood!

Happy Easter!

Holy Week is always a powerful and spiritually challenging time of year, the journey through Christ’s passion to his glorious resurrection brings both pain and joy. A true and perfect love that humans cannot possibly emulate, a sacrificial love that is beyond comprehension. I learn more and reflect more deeply each year.

A blessed and peaceful Holywell Week and Easter to you and your family.

    Marion,

Thank-you! May we all remember with gratitude what Christ has done for us, and may His love compel us to surrender all to Him (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). He alone is worthy (Revelation 5).
